G&M International sponsors Barbuda charity event

The picturesque Cowdray Park Golf Club, South Downs, opened its doors on the 5th July 2018 to host The Barbuda Cup. G&M International were proud sponsors of the 17th hole at the hole-in-one competition alongside the main sponsor of the day, Turrem Data Group.

Organised to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Irma, the event attracted 72 competitors going head to head on the beautiful 18-hole golf course. With the support of sponsors, players, auctions and donations The Barbuda Cup raised over £18,000, which exceeded the £10,000 target.

Players and guests enjoyed a halfway hut rum shack, where they were able to sip rum cocktails in the West Sussex sunshine. Meanwhile, the evening saw a total of 160 people at the clubhouse for a Caribbean BBQ hosted by former West Indies cricket captain Sir Richie Richardson. There was also a live auction carried out by a very realistic Donald Trump!

Overnight on the 5th September 2017, Hurricane Irma damaged and destroyed 95% of all buildings including the hospital, schools, shops and homes in Barbuda. Estimated costs to rebuild the islands are reported to exceed $150 million so individual fundraising is essential. The rebuilding efforts are slow as the island has limited access to materials, running water and electricity so every penny will make a difference.

Hurricanes are one of the main perils in South America and according to NOAA’s Office for Coastal Management, the cumulative cost of the 16 separate billion-dollar weather events in the U.S in 2017 was $306.2 billion. At G&M International we have a range of products which can help cover different risks, from International Property Insurance, Personal Accident and Industrial Coverage through to more risk-specific covers.
